About This Course

Welcome to this foundation course on Sustainable Aviation Fuel, or SAF, SAF certificates, and book-and-claim mechanisms. Aviation is a particularly challenging sector to decarbonise. Aircraft require fuels with very high energy density, and the global aviation system has been built over decades around liquid hydrocarbon fuels. Replacing those fuels therefore involves more than simply finding a lower-carbon energy source. Any alternative must also work safely with aircraft engines, airport infrastructure, storage systems and existing fuel-distribution networks. Sustainable Aviation Fuel is one of the principal solutions being developed to address this challenge.
